Over the years I have guided many people from all over the world. Because of certain moments some stand out in my mind more than others.
One English guest, in particular stands out. She was a lovely woman with many questions on game drive. However she was quite a ‘free spirit’ and would parade around the pool area in her birthday suit. Some of the staff, who are a bit conservative had to serve her. Luckily, I had other duties to attend to.
My first American guests were not only memorable because they came from my home country but they did during their time with me that was very special. We had a program for volunteers, where they would go to the local township to play and work with children at an AIDS orphanage. This family wanted to participate in that program. I took them into town in place of their game drive. After spending the day with the wonderful children, they felt they needed to play an even bigger part. They ended up donating to help built a better, safer home and school.
The most memorable guests I guided were a lovely Dutch couple. They were very nice and were constantly joking. He was also quite boisterous. You’d hear him shouting and cursing playfully. Then when asked to repeat what he’d said by his wife, he’d pretend he had said ‘Sun on the beach’. But the best part was on one evening drive. We’d stopped for sundowners and after pouring drinks I saw one guest was missing. I walked around and caught the husband, a little tipsy, dancing behind the land rover. I couldn’t help but chuckle as he tried to kick his legs over his head, trying to copy the traditional dancing he’d seen the night before.
