Recently I was asked to elaborate about my pig business. I am a student with a student visa so I’m not allowed to hold a proper job. I devised a plan to make some money and to help pay the bills. Enter ‘This Little Piggy Went to Market‘, my pig business.
My business started in 2011. I looked for people who had pigs that had already been raised for me to purchase as fully grown pigs. This was difficult as I needed to make sure the animals were well looked after and very healthy. After a year, I only found two pigs. It was then I decided to raise my own piglets.
I begin with piglets that no longer are suckling. They are kept in an open enclosure with a covered area. They are fed twice a day with a mixture of food scraps, plant matter, and ground bran or maize. This, along with fresh water, gives them a healthy, natural diet to grow. My clients, a healthy alternative to store bought meat.
Unfortunately, the business has been put on a bit of a hold for now. I lost my car in an accident last year making the business too difficult to keep. I would like to be able to continue with this business, as it was quite successful. It is also important in my future plans for a totally sustainable reserve.
